Play Therapy

Play therapy is a child centred, theoretically informed specialised approach to children’s therapy. Children can often experience difficulties adjusting to life circumstances however, children do not possess the cognitive ability to put into words what they are thinking or how they are feeling, often showing us that things are muddled for them through their behaviours.

Therapeutic Play enables children to express, regulate, communicate, practice and master new skills and figure out muddled feelings and thoughts in a safe way. Our therapeutic play therapist will provide your child with a safe, consistent, predictable and warm environment where they can feel free to explore, express, figure out and resolve their muddled and puddled feelings.

Play Therapy Process

Your child’s therapeutic process will begin with two parental/carer intake sessions. These two sessions are solely for parents/carers, your child will not attend parental intake sessions. During parental intake sessions, your child’s therapist will explore your concerns for your child, take a detailed developmental history and formulate a therapeutic plan. Once parental intake sessions are completed an appointment will be made for your child to commence their play therapy process. Parents/carers are required to attend parental review sessions with their child’s therapist, approximately every 6/8 weeks in order to review your child’s therapeutic process, discuss any parental/carer concerns, support and resource you in supporting your child as they engage in their therapeutic process. Children cannot heal in isolation, hence we place a strong value on parental involvement and parental commitment to their child’s therapeutic process. At The Greenane Centre we do not set a specific number of therapeutic play sessions as each child is unique and will move through their process at their own pace. However, we do require parents/carers to commit to at least 18 sessions initially which will be reviewed every 6/8 weeks.
