Supporting Parents as Therapeutic Partners and Agents of Change
in Child and Adolescent Therapy

This two-day training explores how therapists, social workers, family support practitioners and other professionals can work alongside parents and caregivers to support a child’s and adolescent’s therapeutic journey.

During this 2-day training, participants will explore how they can support parents and carers in playing a meaningful, compassionate role in their child’s/adolescent’s healing and development. The aim is not to create “perfect parents”, but to explore how parents and professionals can work together to support children and adolescents’ growth, safety, and emotional well-being during and post their therapeutic process.

This dynamic, practical, and insightful training will combine reflective discussion, examples, practical tools, and creative exercises.

When a child or adolescent is in therapy, much of the real change happens outside the therapy room – in everyday relationships, interactions, and moments at home. Healing can rarely happen in isolation.

Parents and carers can play a vital role in supporting a child’s / adolescents healing. However, professionals are often faced with complex questions:

  1. How do we help parents understand their child’s/adolescent’s behaviour through a therapeutic lens?
  2. How can we support parents to become therapeutic agents of change?
  3. What helps when parents feel overwhelmed, defensive, or unsure about the therapeutic process?
  4. How can we support the parent–child/adolescent relationship before, during, and after therapy?

Over The 2 Days Participants Will Explore:

  • How to support parents in understanding behaviour, emotions, and trauma through accessible psycho-education.
  • Tools and strategies to support parents in strengthening connection, regulation, and emotional safety in everyday interactions with their child/adolescent.
  • Practical ways to support parents in becoming therapeutic agents of change, supporting their child/adolescent between therapy sessions.
  • Supporting parents who are struggling, feeling blamed or overwhelmed, through a compassionate lens.
  • How to manage expectations about what therapy can and cannot do.
  • Insights and direction on supporting parents to continue relational healing beyond therapy.

Uncovering the Hidden Layers of Dissociation

A Nuanced Approach to Working with Dissociation

This one-day workshop is designed for counsellors and psychotherapists who wish to develop a foundational understanding of dissociation and its clinical relevance.

  • It will explore why dissociation develops, with particular focus on the link between early trauma and the brain’s adaptive survival responses;
  • Drawing on contemporary theories in neurobiology, attachment, and structural dissociation, both the triggers and contributing factors that shape dissociative experiences will be considered;
  • The continuum of dissociation from everyday lapses in attention to more complex and chronic dissociative disorders will be highlighted with the aim of equipping therapists to recognise the subtle and overt signs and symptoms in their clients;
  • As well as reviewing current diagnostic criteria, the model of structural dissociation will be introduced, offering a framework for understanding fragmentation of the self in the aftermath of trauma;
  • Finally, the importance of the role of compassion, both as an intervention and as a relational stance will be discussed to help support clients in managing dissociation and fostering integration which is important in laying the groundwork for further therapeutic work.
