Uncovering the Hidden Layers of Dissociation
A Nuanced Approach to Working with Dissociation
This one-day workshop is designed for counsellors and psychotherapists who wish to develop a foundational understanding of dissociation and its clinical relevance.
- It will explore why dissociation develops, with particular focus on the link between early trauma and the brain’s adaptive survival responses;
- Drawing on contemporary theories in neurobiology, attachment, and structural dissociation, both the triggers and contributing factors that shape dissociative experiences will be considered;
- The continuum of dissociation from everyday lapses in attention to more complex and chronic dissociative disorders will be highlighted with the aim of equipping therapists to recognise the subtle and overt signs and symptoms in their clients;
- As well as reviewing current diagnostic criteria, the model of structural dissociation will be introduced, offering a framework for understanding fragmentation of the self in the aftermath of trauma;
- Finally, the importance of the role of compassion, both as an intervention and as a relational stance will be discussed to help support clients in managing dissociation and fostering integration which is important in laying the groundwork for further therapeutic work.

TESTIMONIALS
What Students & Professionals Are Saying
Brilliant course. This is my second course with Greenane. Would highly recommend this from many perspectives; the organization and content of the course and the Lecturers. The weekends were wonderful and I looked forward to participating in each. I started off knowing something about this topic but finished with deeper insights and knowledge, beyond what I imagined and gaining in confidence to work with clients who are neurodivergent. I enjoyed the reading and am still reading. I also cannot speak more highly of the wonderful class cohort I was lucky enough to be with. The lecturers, especially Romy, were all so generous with their time, their research, information , insights, experiences and notes. Liz as usual guided us all through it. Really wonderful. Enjoyed it all so much. The standard of teaching was high and the degree of kindness and understanding shown to all was exemplary. A course to remember for all the right reasons.
I really enjoyed this course and the tutors made the experience so enriching, especially Romy. I have learned so much about neurodiversity an area I was previously lacking, and this has hugely benefited my clinical work.
Such a brilliant course! The facilitation allowed for such rich sharing and learning, and I would highly recommend the course to others.
I really enjoyed the course and the tutors were amazing especially Romy. Couldn’t fault anything. I have learned so much around neurodiversity, something I was previously lacking. It has really benefited my clinical work.
This was a wonderful course which I thoroughly enjoyed. I felt held by Greenane at all times with support always available if and when needed. The course was informative and I have learned so much from my participation. Both Patricia and Marian were possessed excellent skills in both their presentation skills and in the information provided. I would highly recommend the course to fellow colleagues.
The Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy training was highly valuable, offering a clear blend of theory, neuroscience, and practical interventions. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on safety, regulation, Polyvagal and the three-phase trauma model, alongside creative interventions such as expressive arts, which provided safe ways to process trauma. The supportive group environment also made the experience especially enriching, creating a safe space for sharing, reflection, and mutual learning. Overall, the training was engaging, comprehensive, and left me with both practical tools and a stronger trauma-informed lens to bring into my work.
This course has provided me with a wonderful training opportunity with top class tutors. It has given me the knowledge and the confidence to work with trauma clients in a manner that is safe for the client. The course provides both professional and personal development. The Greenane Centre provides a very easy to use website which enhances the learning experience. Support is made available throughout the course to all participants. I whole heartedly recommend this course to anyone with an interest in trauma work.
The course was brilliant. The admin side was well looked after. I found it very beneficial to have everything in the client portal, so handy and well organised. Patricia was just unbelievable in the content material, delivery and explaining stuff really really well. I was most pleased that the whole course was online and scheduled for reasonable times during the evenings and weekends. That made a huge difference for me in comparison to other courses that are out there.
I found the Diploma in Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy to be a valuable and enriching experience overall. The modules delivered by Patricia Allen-Garrett were particularly engaging – well-structured, grounded in strong clinical knowledge, and clearly informed by deep experience. Her facilitation brought the material to life in a way that felt both accessible and professionally relevant. I came away from those sessions feeling more confident in applying trauma-informed principles to my client work.
A fantastic learning experience. Loved the therapeutic learning approach and the experiential aspect of the course. Thanks to everyone involved in the Greenane Centre, my lecturers and colleagues on the course for making this such a transformative learning experience which will no doubt benefit my neurodivergent clients.
